CHEVRON YOGA MAT BAG

Gift time part two! To accompany the stained glass water bottle, I was looking for something unique to get my sister who has recently gotten into yoga. What's more fun than a pretty bag to carry your mat around with?

This bag is based off of Hanri's pattern which can be found here (she has a wonderful blog all about yoga, you should check it out!). I wanted this bag to be specifically for a yoga mat so the design had to be adjusted in the diameter of the bag as well as the overall length. This bag also features straps that automatically close the bag when you wear it. Fun!

GATHER THE GOODS

You'll need:

2 Skeins Color "A" Cotton Worsted Yarn(white in my case)
2 Skeins Color "B" Cotton Worsted Yarn (black if you're following along at home)
1 size G or H crochet needle (I used G)
Scissors (pretty little ones are optional, but they do make me happier!)
1 tapestry needle
2 size US 5 or 6 double pointed needles (not pictured)

THE PATTERN
(I apologize if there are mistakes. This is my first attempt at writing a pattern so let me know if it doesn't make sense and I'll try to fix it!!)

Begin with Color A, crocheting in the round.

Row 1: Ch 4, Sl st to create a loop.

Row 2: sc into loop (8 stitches)

Row 3: 2 sc in each stitch (16 stitches)

Row 4: sc for 2 stitches, sc in one stitch, repeat until the end of the row (24 stitches)

Row 5: Repeat row 3 (36 stitches)

Row 6: sc for 5 stitches, sc in one stitch, repeat until the end of the row (43 stitches)

Row 7: sc for 10 stitches, sc in one stitch, repeat until the end of the row (47 stitches)

Row 8: sc for 15 stitches, sc in one stitch, repeat until the end of the row (50 stitches)

You should have 50 stitches in the round and the piece should measure roughly 5 inches in diameter.

At this point we are finished increasing. Join yarn B, sc into next stitch with yarn B over yarn A using the tapestry crochet technique. Switch to yarn A, sc into the next 9 st by crocheting over yarn B. *sc with yarn B, sc in next 9 st with yarn A* repeat from * 3 more times.

Repeat the pattern as many times as desired or until the bag covers the length of your mat. (I repeated for 8 iterations)

Above is a step by step depiction of the tapestry method. This method is basically the act of crocheting one color over the other. Just hold the color you do not wish to show against the stitches that you are crocheting with and let the stitch wrap around it.

To change colors, switch which yarn you hook and continue on in your basic stitch. Try to keep the balls of yarn you are drawing from in consistent places to keep anomalies from showing up in your finished work (ie keep the white yarn on your right and black yarn on your left).

THE STRAP
(Feel free to make your strap as a crochet chain, I just wanted a sturdier cord.)

Row X: After you finish the pattern,  in color A work 1 row of dc, ch 2, turn the work. Do not continue in the round. Repeat for a total of 4 rows. Bind off.

You should have a split in the top of your bag.

Strap: Using your size US 6 dpns, cast on 3 stitches using color B. Work as an I cord: knit to end of row, do not turn work, instead slide work to opposite end of dpn and knit second row. Repeat until your cord is roughly 4'-6", or double your desired strap length.

Bend the flap that you created at the top of the bag to the inside. Sew the top stitches to the base of row X using color A. This will create a channel for the strap to fit through.

Feed the strap through the new channel and sew the ends to the base of the bag roughly where you began the pattern.

And that's it! Go enjoy your adorable new yoga bag :)

  1. The only thing I don't see in this pattern is how many yards in each skein of yarn? Thanks
